13 Strangest Places Where People Live, Number 2 is Hard To Believe

Number 6 – Al Hajarah, Yemen

Al Hajarah

Al Hajjarah, Yemen – anyone who goes to investigate this mystery city in Yemen’s Haraz Mountains will undoubtedly have their imaginations captured. Stone houses painted in white with small glassless windows are scattered all over this place. What makes the area notable are these tall houses that are perilously near the cliff’s edge.

Al Hajjarah was founded by the Sulayhids in the 12 century. The old home of Imam Yahya Muhammad, a contributor to the Italo-Yemeni Treaty, is also located in Al Hajjarah.

The fortress of this place was essential to the Ottomans’ control of Yemen because of its advantageous location for gazing over the country and its strategic importance. It takes 5 kilometres to climb to Al Hajjarah hamlet, from the well-known city of Manakhah.
