Number 12 – The Tunnels Of Bucharest, Romania
Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is home to a huge number of people who have to live their life in a tunnel. It is estimated that over 1100 children are living an underground life in Bucharest.
After the fall of the Soviet Union, the orphanages of the country started closing one by one and it left an entire generation of children with no home. When they were left on the streets, having no other options to stay, they moved to the underground tunnels.
Throughout the years, the number of children living in the tunnels has increased. Most of them have become drug addicts and even the government hardly takes any step for their sake. Now, after so many years, they are getting featured in the media and some NGOs have been established to improve their life.
